The body of chess legend Bobby Fischer was “exhumed” Monday under a cloak of secrecy, three weeks following the Icelandic Supreme Court ruling to settle a paternity dispute.

Lawyer Sammy Estimo, representing Fischer’s alleged nine-year-old daughter Jinky Young, confirmed wire reports, adding that tissue samples were taken without removing the coffin of the former world champion from the grave.

“From what I heard, a hole was drilled on the casket. It was done in a dignified manner,” Estimo said.

Estimo said that Fischer’s DNA sample together with Jinky’s and her mother Marilyn Young’s would be sent to Germany for testing.

“My best guess is, the results would be available in three weeks or a month from now,” Estimo said.

Estimo disclosed that he received an e-mail from his Icelandic counterpart Thordur Bogason last week, detailing the exhumation process to be led by the police chief of in the district of Laugadalir.

Bogason said Fischer’s sample will be retrieved by a specialist doctor under the presence of the local priest, local doctor along with the attorneys.

He said media won’t be given access or would be informed of the date.

Bogason said he does not have a clue on how long the procedure would be, except saying that the findings would be forwarded to the Icelandic laboratory which will announce the results.

Meanwhile, Marilyn and Jinky Young were in Cotabato City and could not be reached for comment.

Estimo said Marilyn Young was forced to change her mobile phone number after receiving threatening text messages from at least three sources.

Fischer died on January 17, 2008 at the age of 64 and was buried in the cemetery of Laugardaelir Church, just outside Selfoss, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Reykjavik.
