Paranaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe Wednesday said his administration would remain focused on basic services.

Bernabe said that with infrastructure and other systems firmly in place and running as programmed, he set his sights on four immediate concerns: Flooding, depressed areas, garbage , and traffic.

He said that while vigorous measures have already been undertaken to mitigate these issues, there is still much to be done.

The city has purchased a “Spider” backhoe to clear creeks of debris and dredging equipment to clean the Parañaque River which is the catch basin of all waterways in the city.

Bernabe said that rip rapping of major creeks is continuously being done to prevent soil erosion.

He said that part of his program for his third term in office is to make the city squatter-free.

The mayor explained that the city government’s program for the urban poor is working well in partnership with the Gawad Kalinga (GK), well-meaning corporations and NGOs. This has given birth to numerous socialized housing projects that benefit thousands of marginal families in the city.

The city has 30 GK villages, the second most number in Metro Manila.

Parañaque has already established several Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF) but plans to build a central MRF to accommodate a greater volume of garbage for segregation.

Bernabe said the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in strategic locations in the city would help traffic enforcers and police officers monitor streets and keep them orderly and safe.

He said that the city will also soon have its own asphalt batching plant for road maintenance projects.
