GMA not expected to attend House orientation
Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been invited to join a big batch of 119 first-time congressmen to undergo orientation on the legislative process Thursday before the House of Representatives convenes on July 26.
However, House of Representatives Secretary General Marilyn Yap said Arroyo is not expected to attend because as a former senator she is already familiar with the work of Congress.
"I don't think so, she is not a neophyte. She was a senator before. But we invited everybody," Yap said when asked whether the former president is expected at the orientation.
The orientation was organized by the House of Representatives for the first-time congressmen so they would be acquainted with how Congress does its work.
There are 114 first-time congressmen in the 15th Congress, and the rest of the 287 other congressmen are either in their second or third terms, or had been members of Congress before.
Congressmen who will attend the orientation will be briefed on the legislative process, the process of drafting and filing bills, parliamentary procedures and rules, and the budget process.
The orientation will be held at the House of Representatives from 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon Thursday.
Yap said there are 38 solons on their third and final term while 24 lawmakers are returnees.
The rest of the 287-member House of Representatives in the 15th Congress come from party-list groups, although 20 party-list representatives are still awaiting proclamation pending resolutions of pending disqualification cases.
