'Any coup attempt under P-Noy's administration is unnecessary' — Honasan

MANILA (PNA) -– With the Philippines moving forward the right direction, senator Gregorio ‘Gringo’ Honasan declared on Wednesday that any coup attempt specially under the administration of President Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III is ‘unnecessary.’

”There is no reason. It’s not necessary. It no longer exists. In our democratic space, we have a lot of ways to express,” Honasan said in a phone patch interview with Senate media.

As lawmaker of three terms now, Honasan admitted that he is tired of reading and hearing that he spearheaded coup attempts.

”What ever I said, my name has always been linked by saying that senator Honasan was involved in the nine coup attempts. That is losing my appetite,” Honasan said, drawing amusement from the media members listening to his phone patch interview.

Honasan said it is high time to move forward, urging the Filipino people to unite and support the new administration instead of hanging on the painful past experiences.

”That is past. All of us have learned painful lesson. I don’t even want to categorically say I have regrets because we are now moving forward. As far as I am concerned, this opinion (coup) is unnecessary,” Honasan declared.

Honasan has led nine coup attempts during the time of former President Corazon Aquino, mother of President Noynoy Aquino.

He has been granted amnesty by Cory’s successor former President Fidel V. Ramos and eventually elected senator in 1995.

Honasan's name cropped up when he played a key role in the 1986 EDSA Revolution that toppled the dictatorship of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos.

”Let’s now avoid unearthing the previous mistakes. That will not be good. I would rather focus on my job in the senate,” Honasan said.

When asked what committee he wants to handle in the 15th Congress, Honasan said he would prefer to handle the defense committee which was formerly handled by former senator and now Muntinlupa congressman Rodolfo Biazon.

Honasan said former senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. has also turned overf the local government. (PNA)
