President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III is demanding immediate attention for the improvement of safety equipment installed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) before it suffers another downgrade from the international community.

The President admitted he was dismayed with aviation authorities over the “wrong governance” of the airport, following the breakdown of navigation equipment at the NAIA, which recently forced the cancellation of flights.

Mr. Aquino held a meeting with Transportation Secretary Jose de Jesus last Tuesday to tackle the problems of the department, including the condition of the navigational tool that helps airplanes land during bad weather and poor visibility.

Aviation authorities, according to the President, only began to search for a replacement for the 14-year-old navigation device two years ago, even though they were informed that the device was good for 15 years.

“This is a particular area of concern. I’m not happy obviously with what they have done,” he told reporters last Wednesday at the Palace.

To remedy the problem at the NAIA, the President said airport authorities borrowed the navigation equipment from the Subic airport “so Subic does not have the equipment now to make NAIA work.”

“They were made aware that this was a potential problem. Two years later, they are just beginning to look for a supplier,” he said, adding the procurement process will likely take some time due to lots of requirements.

“This was wrong governance. Why did they allow the problem to pile up before they acted? The problem is we inherited this,” he added.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) earlier announced that the navigational aid at the airport is now normal and stable, allowing domestic and international flights to land safely.

But the NAIA has reportedly been advised to purchase buy a new navigation equipment.
