Education Secretary Armin Luistro is set to face the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) this Sunday in Paco, Manila, where he is expected to discuss the sex education in public schools.

Luistro’s audience with the Bishops was revealed in an article posted on the CBCP Web site.

According to Monsignor Juanito Figura, CBCP secretary general, the meeting was initiated by Luistro in order to know the sentiments of the Bishops over the Department of Education’s (DepEd’s) controversial program specifically about the sex education modules.

It can be recalled that Luistro earlier vowed to review the sex education program and is currently making efforts to meet with different stakeholders to find common ground and build a consensus.

Some Bishops have already expressed their strong opposition to the program, saying that the role of teaching such sensitive things should better be left to the parents.

Aside from sex education, the Bishops currently attending their 101st Plenary Assembly at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center will also discuss another controversial issue which is the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.

Invited speakers for the topic are CBCP lawyer Jo Imbong and Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez.

The Plenary Assembly of the CBCP which started Friday is expected to end Sunday night.

As of Saturday noon, one honorary and 91 active members of the Bishops’ collegial body are in attendance.

CBCP has 133 members, 98 are active and 33 retired.

Seen at the meeting were CBCP President Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar, Archbishops Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales of Manila, and Ricardo Cardinal Vidal of Cebu.
