The English eccentric

There’s nothing quite as eccentric as an English eccentric. The emergence of the modern dandy—particularly in London but increasingly as a global trend—inspired the Fred Perry Fall/Winter 2010 Authentic collection.

For men, it’s an opportunity to add the flamboyance of traditional “peacock” dressing to contemporary menswear staples such as slim leg trousers and rolled up chinos. The silhouette is still sleek but the details are decidedly dapper. Rich, autumnal colors—mahogany, rust, hunting green, camel and mulberry—are given a fashion edge with blocks, panels, stripes, seams and tipping in fizzing hot pink, mandarin, bright lagoon, bright orange and fern green.

Patterns and textures are typically English with argyles, tartans, houndstooth checks, Prince of Wales checks, tattersall checks, waxed cottons, cable knits, cotton twills and meltons alongside signature Fred Perry piqués. The dandy will take particular delight in aristocratic pindots, medallion prints and paisleys straight out of a gentlemen’s club. Tie prints, small collars and elbow patches are a playful homage to the past; bow ties a styling essential.

Key pieces include a classic Fred Perry shirt with multi-colored laurel logo, striped polos, pindot shirts, brushed tartan shirts with a soft, laundered handle, Y-neck knits, a back-blocked Argyle cardigan, tapered leg chinos, a dry waxed cotton terrace jacket and a melton duffle.

For women’s wear, the inspiration comes from the items in a boyfriend’s wardrobe—those baggy jumpers and oversized shirts—a girlfriend has to borrow. The tomboy chic of recent collections has taken a new twist with oversized silhouettes, relaxed boyfriend fits and sexy plunge necklines, all with a simple, clean cut preppy feel.

The oversized theme plays with scale, proportion and design details, updating classic Fred Perry pieces with oversized trims and tipping, oversized checks and even oversized laurel branding. Familiar shapes are reinvented with longer lines, dropped armholes, tabbed turn-ups

The iconic Fred Perry shirt, for example, is refreshed with oversized tipping, an extra large button or a low cut v-neck. Chunky cable cardigans are even chunkier. The oversized neck of a longer line Harrington jacket transforms a signature Fred Perry piece into an instant fashion must-have.

A core color palette of peacock purple, mid grey, charcoal and black is illuminated by bright violet and scarlet. Jade is the strongest fashion color for winter, appearing as plain blocks or popping through in laurel branding, tipping and checks.
