‘Basyang’ deaths rise to 38, with 47 missing

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) on Friday placed the death toll from typhoon “Basyang” (international codename “Conson”) to 38, with 47 persons still missing.

Estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, and schools in Regions IV-A, V, and the National Capital Region, was placed at least P147 million, according to the NDCC.

The latest bodies retrieved were that of Edwin Ledesma, captain of the tanker “Deborah Uno” that sunk in the vicinity of Mariveles, Bataan due to strong currents and big waves. Ledesma’s body was found on the shore of Barangay Lamao, Limay, Bataan.

Alvin Magadia of Lucena, and Albert Jhin Fortunato and Nestor Sollestre, both of Barangay Pandan, Real, Quezon – who all drowned, were the other additions to the list of fatalities.

Of the 38 dead, 13 were from Region 3; 21 from Region 4-A, and 4 from Region 5.

The number of missing people, on the other hand, is now 47 – with 37 in Region 5; eight in Region 4-A; and one each in Regions 3 and 6.

The NDCC also said there were 12 injured.

The report further stated at least 30,644 families or 153,426 people were affected in 411 barangays in nine cities and 63 towns in 12 provinces in Regions 3, 4-A, 5, and Metro Manila.

As of press time, the NDCC said some 1,757 families or 8,918 people remained in 51 evacuation centers after the typhoon damages a total of 18,658 houses, with 2,581 totally damaged and 16,067 partially damaged.

Meanwhile, damage to agriculture, infrastructure, fisheries and schools in Southern Luzon, Bicol and Metro Manila was estimated at P147.556 million.

Some 71,724 metric tons of vegetables worth R1.398 million were lost from 207 hectares in Laguna, the NDCC report said, adding that the typhoon also caused at least 52 vessels of varied types to be destroyed, run aground, capsized, or half-submerged in different places in Bataan.
