Jose Rizal University didn't have to go through the proverbial eye of the needle in scoring this one.
Running and scoring at every opportunity, the Heavy Bombers coasted to a 78-62 win over Perpetual Help to extend their winning run to three in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
After trailing 34-29 at the half, the Heavy Bombers came through with several spurts that saw them take a 16-point lead in the third and 20 early in the fourth before playing it smart down the stretch to hike their record to 3-1 for solo fourth.
A small but quick line up composed of Marvin Hayes, John Lopez, Ildefonso Bulangis, Cameroonian Njei Nchotu and Alex Almario did the trick in the third quarter break away as they combined for 23 points in the period to outscore the Altas, 32-11.
Lopez led the attack with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting while Alamario finished with 12 and Hayes 11 for the Bombers, who scored their first lopsided win this season after a scary 72-62 overtime win against Letran and 66-62 win over Arellano.
Mapua rebounded from a heart-breaking defeat to San Beda last week by routing Arellano University, 73-51, in the second game. The Cardinals, who dropped a close 69-64 decision to the Red Lions on July 8, improved to 2-1 for solo fifth, while the Chiefs slipped to their third straight loss in a 1-3 card.
In junior play, the Perpetual junior Altas rode on the 36-point effort of Joshua Alolino to beat the Jose Rizal Light Bombers, 90-74, for their third win in four starts.
