‘Basyang’ death toll now 68; 84 still missing
Three more people were confirmed dead Sunday, raising the death toll from the onslaught of typhoon “Basyang “ (international code name “Conson”) to 68 as 84 more people remained missing, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported.
Three bodies were retrieved as search and rescue teams from all units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), joined by volunteers and operatives of other agencies, continued to scour coastal areas for those reported missing at sea.
Based on the latest NDCC bulletin, 47 of the 84 missing are in the Bicol region while 30 are in Region 4-A; six are in Region 3; and one in Region 6.
The bulletin also showed that Region 4A absorbed the highest number of casualties with 41 fatalities and 24 injured.
Two of the latest fatalities were identified as Romualdo Ladimo, 47, of Barangay Caridad, Ibaba, Atimonan, Quezon; and Angelo Parga, 30, of Barangay Zone 4, Poblacion, Atimonan, Quezon. They are believed to be among the passengers of vessels battered at sea during Basyang’s onslaught overnight since Tuesday.
The NDCC reported that 62 vessels figured in maritime incidents as Basyang battered the country last week.
Meanwhile, another unidentified body was found between the Mauban and Atimonan shorelines, the NDCC said.
Based on the NDCC’s assessment on the adverse effects of Basyang, the first typhoon to cross the mainland this year, were minimal as compared with the likes of typhoon “Ondoy” in September last year.
