Ex-UE Warriors power Cobra to TOP cage title
Host Cobra Energy Drink completed its amazing run in the Tournament of the Philippines seventh leg as it stunned fancied M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Cebu, 81-63, to wrest the leg crown on Saturday at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym in Manila.
The Ironmen leaned on former University of the East stars Pari Llagas, Rudy Lingganay and Val Acuña to become the third host team to win a leg in this tournament jointly organized by the Philippine Basketball League and Liga Pilipinas.
Llagas starred in this one-game title showdown registering 24 points and seven rebounds while Lingganay and Acuna tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively, to give Cobra its second leg crown.
The Asia Brewery franchise received 10 points for winning the crown plus two more for their two victories in the leg elims. That enabled it to climb up to third place with 27 points trailing Cebu (37 points) and idle Ascof Lagundi (29 points).
The Ironmen led 36-32 at the half but the trio of Llagas, Lingganay and Acuña led a big pullaway to gain a 59-48 lead at the end of the third period.
Cebu's Mark Ababon scored to cut the deficit to seven points, 61-54, with about seven minutes left but the squad of interim coach Joel Palapal was too much to secure the championship.
Ababon, a lefty backup point guard for M. Lhuillier, topscored with 18 points while ex-pro Bruce Dacia added 12 markers but the team of coach Yayoy Alcoseba saw a sluggish outing from star shooter Stephen Padilla, who was held to just four points.
It was only Cebu's second loss in the tournament. Two days prior, it lost to MP Gensan, 79-74, that snapped its amazing 30-game winning run dating back to the Liga Pilipinas Conference III.
