Chavit Singson maintains hands-off stance on his son's drug case

Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson will not lift a finger to help his son, Ilocos Representative Ronald V. Singson, who is incarcerated in Hong Kong for drug charges.
The young Singson was arrested on July 11 for alleged possession of illegal drugs. When apprehended at the Hong Kong International Airport, Singson allegedly had with him 26 grams of cocaine and 2 tablets of Valium.
Chavit Singson confirmed the news about the arrest, debunking reports he was with his son in Mongolia that time.
“Oo, oo. Na-confirm... may nagbalita sa akin sa nangyari. ‘Yun nga ang very unfortunate na nangyari,” he said on “Showbiz Central,” July 25.
As far as the Ilocos governor is concerned, his son is drug-free.
“Kasi meron kaming kompanya na tsini-check namin lahat ‘yung mga empleyado. Dina-drug test namin. Pati pamilya ko, ginagawa ko ‘yon. ‘Pag nagpa-drug test kami sa mga emplyado, pati pamilya ginagawa ko ‘yon.
“So, okay naman, as of last month [ay] okay naman [siya]. So, very unfortunate ang nangyari kung paano nadala sa barkada niya na gano’n ang ginawa,” the elder Singson explained.
Painful as it may, Chavit said he is not giving his son a helpline as he faces the drug charges.
“Kailangan doon may proseso, eh. So, hindi ko naman pinapakialaman kasi maski na ‘yung mga kababayan ko, ‘pagka ganyang bagay [ay] ‘di ko tinutulungan. So, pati na rin ang pamilya ko, although mahal ko ang aking anak, eh, parang hesitant akong tumulong. Pinababayaan ko na lang ang batas sa Hong Kong kung anuman ‘yon.”
On "TV Patrol" July 25, Chavit reiterated his stance not to help his son.
“Wala akong kausap sa Foreign Affairs. Wala akong kinausap maski isa. ‘Pagka ganitong kaso, hindi ako nakikipag-usap,” he said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs bolstered this claim in its official statement that read: “The Filipino national has not requested the consulate general any assistance at this time.”
He is hopeful that his son will get out of the mess.
“Umaasa na lang kami na makalabas [siya] the soonest possible time.”
Singson shared what could have triggered his son’s depression.
“Nag-umpisa ‘yan noong nag-away sila ni Lovi [Poe, the singer-actress rumored to be Ronald's girlfriend] tapos nagkatampuhan, umalis. So, wala na akong alam do’n. Natural lang siguro ‘yung nagkatampuhan sila. Siguro dinibdib niya, umalis tapos naano ‘yung mga barkada niya. So, ‘yun ‘yong nangyari,” he shared.
Asked to comment on Ronald Singson's situation, Lovi kept mum. She, however, reacted to a rumor that she was seen crying inside a bar recently.
“Saan? Wow! Talaga? Sabay gano’n, eh. Hindi ko alam, eh. Siguro na-miss ko lang magdrama kasi ang tagal ko nang walang drama show kaya nag-iinarte ako do’n (laughs),” she said.
Still not about to dignify the rumor, Lovi said she will rise above any problem she has now.
“Siguro, whatever it is I’m going through, I believe I can push through... I could go through it. Kasi I’ve my family and my friends. So I think whatever it is I’m going through, kayang-kaya ko ‘yan. I mean, I’ve gone through the worst already and I can do it all over again,” Lovi said with confidence.
Meanwhile, Jomari Yllana, actor and business partner of Ronald Singson, refused to talk about his friend’s predicament.
“I don’t know the real story yet for now. ‘Di ko pa siya nakakausap, but as a bestfriend and a brother, I am praying for him and his well being,” he said on his Twitter account.
Jomari requested the public to not pass judgment on his beleaguered friend.
“I ask that judgments on my friend not be made until then. I know the truth will eventually come out and I’ll deal with the truth when it is in front of me. Until then, I will continue to pray for the welfare of my close friend,” he texted on “TV Patrol,” July 25.
Director General Dionisio Santiago of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency would not say if the young Singson is included in their watch list.
“‘Wag na rin nating sagutin. Bayaan muna nating magkuwan ‘yung case na ito,” Santiago said.
But he added, “Pareho sila ni Mayor Lim, eh. Sabi sa akin ni kuwan no’ng makita ko, ‘O, general, maski sa pamilya ko, ‘pag may magba-violate ng anti-drug law, banatan mo.’”
