Wesley seeks bounce back
BIEL, Switzerland — After a one-day rest, Grandmaster Wesley So resumes his campaign in the 2010 Biel Young Grandmasters chess championship against GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam in the pivotal seventh round late Monday (Manila time).
So, tied for second to sixth places with 3.5 points on two wins, three draws and one loss, will play white against Truong Son, the eighth-seeded Vietnamese hope.
The 16-year-old Filipino champion, who dropped out of the lead after losing his fifth-round showdown against GM Fabiano Caura of Italy last Friday, needs a win against Truong Son to boost his title chances.
So has won two matches in the nine-round, closed tournament against GM David Howell of England in the first round and GM Maxim Rodshteinof Israel in the third round.
He drew three matches against top seed GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, in the second round, GM Parimarjan Negi of India in the fourth round and GM Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia in the sixth round.
His lone setback came at the hands of Caruana, the 17-year-old Italian-American who learned to play chess in the same Brooklyn Chess Club where the late American legend Bobby Fischer started.
