Tour legend’s son rises in qualifying
Lloyd Lucien Reynante lived up to his lofty status by setting a Philippine record in the 40-km Road Race Individual Time Trial (ITT) in the penultimate day of the Koten Unification Races on Monday in Balayan, Batangas.
Son of the legendary Tour champion – Manuel – Reynante completed the race that passed through Balayan, Lian and Calatagan in 58 minutes and 22.55 seconds to erase the old mark of one hour set by Domingo Villanueva in an Australian race 15 years ago.
Tomas Martinez, Reynante’s teammate in the 7-11 RP team, came in second after clocking three seconds later than Reynante.
But because both Reynante and Martinez are already members of the RP cycling team on account of their efforts in track events, their slots in the ITT will be given to the third and fourth finishers – Irish Valenzuela (+12 seconds) and Reynaldo Navarro (+1:08).
Reynante placed second in the 4-km team pursuit while Martinez also finished second in the points race event.
The organizers want their riders to focus only on one event in the coming Guangzhou Asian Games to better their chances.
