Calamity fund might have been used for Arroyo campaign — Abad
MANILA (PNA) — Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad on Tuesday said the calamity budget might have been used to fund the campaign of former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
At a press briefing, Abad, who was Education Secretary under Arroyo's term, said P105 million of the calamity fund went to Arroyo's district in Pampanga in the last six months of her term.
Earlier, Abad revealed that the P2-billion calamity fund for 2010 is almost gone. Only 30 percent or P600 million is left to use for the rest of the year.
"That is not an unfair conclusion since it happened during the election season," Abad said when asked if the calamity funds were spent for the campaign.
The Budget chief said he was asked by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to investigate why the calamity funds were nearly depleted.
More exposes are expected to be revealed in the next few days as status reports of government agencies are continuously being submitted for review.
