Two strong earthquakes rocked Cotabato City Thursday afternoon, according to reports.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the first quake occurred on 3:31 PM and had a magnitude of 6.4; its epicenter was located at 125 kilometers southwest of Cotabato City with a depth of 615 kilometers.

After few minutes, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 occurred and had almost the same location as the first quake with a depth of 621 kilometers.

Both tremors were reportedly tectonic in origin and, because of their depth, are unlikely to cause much damage.

"A large magnitude earthquake come from a very deep origin, the shaking that would generate at the surface will be much lesser due to the thickness of pile of rock; thus, this quake will not be dangerous," Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said.
