Calvin Abueva produced another monster game as San Sebastian College turned back Jose Rizal University, 72-59, and kept its streak going in Friday's 86th NCAA tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Known as the "Beast," Abueva had a double-double performance with 16 points and 15 boards aside from registering four steals as the defending champion Stags rolled to their fifth straight victory to tie idle San Beda College at 5-0.
“What can I say, he (Abueva) is always like that even in practice. He’s part of the reason we won,” SSC coach Ato Agustin said.
In the first game, Mapua banked on Mark Acosta's 20-point performance to crush a short-handed Letran side, 66-51, and claim its third victory in five games for solo fourth.
The Stags began pulling away early in the second period when they unleashed an 11-0 spurt to turn a 24-all deadlock into 35-24 halftime lead.
Behind Abueva's strong inside plays and Ronald Pascual and John Raymundo's red hot-shooting, the Stags were able bloat their lead to14 points several times in the third.
The Bombers managed to inch closer, 45-36, on a jumper by Ildefonso Bulangis at the close of the third, but the Stags could not be denied as they baffled their rivals with their running attack.
A jumper by Abueva off the outstretched arms of Cameroonian Joe Etame put the Stags beyond reach, 63-43, less three minutes left.
Rey Nambatac and Mark Cruz combined for 49 points and 15 boards as the Letran Squires beat the Mapua Red Robins, 89-83, for their first win in five starts in the junior division. Jose Rizal Light Bombers likewise walked the tightrope before beating the San Sebastian Staglets, 70-69.
