MANILA (PNA) — President Benigno Simeon Aquino III awaits the final recommendation on the proposed fare hike at Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and cut in government subsidy.

President Aquino, during a chance interview after his keynote address to the 3rd Liga ng Barangay convention held at the SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, told Palace reporters that there was a proposal to level the fare of MRT to the fare of buses plying the route of EDSA.

He also admitted that there was also a proposal to reduce the government's subsidy in MRT.

”Ang laki masyado ng subsidy sa train, wala naman tayong pampuno dun [There is a large amount in subsidizing the train. But we have no budget for that],” the President said.

At present, the government subsidizes both the MRT and the Light Railways Transit (LRT).
