Already one of the most decorated sports associations in the country, the Philippine bowling team eyes another world glory when it leaves for Munich, Germany on Monday for the World Men’s Championships on August 12 to 21.

Bannered by former masters champion Biboy Rivera, the squad will go up against 370 players from 69 countries.

Events on tap are singles, doubles, trios, team, all-event and masters.

Rivera, who won the title in the 2006 South Korea edition, on Tuesday expressed confidence of their chances, saying they have trained long enough for the event.

“We’re focused more on having quality training than quantity, although we have been practicing every day. I believe we have a good fighting chance,” said Rivera at the weekly PSA Forum at Shakey’s on UN Avenue.

“We’ll be prepared, pero depende na rin yun sa breaks for the game.”

Joining Rivera in the campaign are Asian Championships gold medalist Raoul Miranda, Chester King, Bensher Layoso and 18-year-old rookie Frederick Chua. They will be coached by Jojo Canare.

Rivera expects a strong competition from the host team, especially against Achim Grabowski whom he beat for the masters title four years back. The United States squad, composed of professional bowlers, is another stumbling block for the team.”

The world championship will also be a great exposure for the male bowlers in their campaign for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, where Rivera targets to improve his ninth place finish in the individual event.
