Lions eye share of NCAA lead

12 noon — San Beda vs Arelllano (Jrs)
2 p.m. — Letran vs CSB (Srs)
4 p.m. — San Beda vs Arellano (Srs)
San Beda College coach Frankie Lim is so satisfied with the way his boys are playing that the only thing missing from them right now, he said, is “a championship trophy.”
Just seven days after playing their best game in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament, the Red Lions square off with Arellano University this Wednesday, not only to extend their unbeaten run to six games, but also to gain a piece of the lead.
The Lions are coming off a lopsided 101-77 victory against University of Perpetual Help, a win made more special by the rare triple-double output of American import Sudan Daniel.
The 6-foot-8 Daniel fired 16 points, cleared 10 boards and swatted 10 shots in 24 minutes of action as San Beda posted its third straight lopsided victory.
“With a team performance like that, I can’t say anything more,” Lim said after his team took a 30-point lead against the Altas at one point. “I can’t ask for more. The guys are doing everything and we are still unbeaten.”
“It’s a monster game for Sudan. I hope he plays like that every game.” Lim said of Daniel who went on to win the NCAA Press Corps' Accel/Filoil Player of the Week.
Game time is 4 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan City, with the Lions, owing to their height advantage and deeper bench, installed as heavy favorites against the Chiefs (2-3), who will try to shake off the rust from a 14-day break.
The last time the Chiefs played was on July 21 when they manhandled the Altas, 86-77.
Although the Red Lions were pushed to their limit by the Mapua Cardinals, 69-64, they still posted an impressive winning margin of 24.4 points. Despite that, they will not take the Chiefs for granted.
A victory by the Red Lions will allow them tie idle defending champion San Sebastian College (6-0) at the top.
Clashing in the first game at 2 p.m. are Letran and College of St. Benilde with both teams determined to bounce back strong.
