BATANGAS – Mayor of Talisay-turned-Vice Mayor Florencio Manimtim was wounded Saturday when gunmen attacked him at his father’s funeral at the Talisay Public Cemetery, police said.

Manimtim, who was mayor for nine years prior to winning as vice mayor this year, survived the 11:30 a.m. attack, said Superintendent Arcadio Ronquillo, Batangas Police Provincial Office (PPO) spokesperson.

Manimtim, 50, was approached by a gunman and shot in the back of the head.

In the ensuing shootout, the assailants killed his bodyguard Guillermo Macaraeg and wounded his other aide, Joel Caringal. Ronquillo said police were tracking down the suspects.

In a separate incident, Police Officer 2 Reynaldo Macalaguim, 39, assigned to the Balayan Police Station, was shot dead in Balayan, this province, on Friday night.

His unidentified assailants also shot and wounded his companion, Richard Villarin, in the 10 p.m. attack. Stray bullets also wounded civilians John Paulo Rizara, 17, a student, and a certain Mark Jonas Ilao.

“The motive (in the killing) is still to be ascertained. The suspects are still at large,” said Ronquillo.
