New-look Adamson is new kid on block

After three inspiring victories, including against league-leading Far Eastern University, the Adamson Falcons appear to have completely shed their “heartbreak kid” tag.

Rightly so, they’re now slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Their last three games perhaps showed they have already matured, thus making them a big threat to the projected FEU-Ateneo title showdown.

Last week, they came back from eight points down to stun La Salle, 70-68, and made the biggest stunner of the season on Thursday when Eric Camson tipped in a missed shot by Alex Nuyles to hand FEU its first defeat, 64-63.

But if everyone thought that Adamson is due to lose that poise under pressure against University of Santo Tomas, they were wrong as the Falcons drew clutch plays to escape with an 81-76 double overtime win on Sunday.

"It's hard to get two big wins against La Salle and FEU. Siguro ang kalaban namin is yung complacency," said coach Leo Austria, whose squad regained solo second with seven wins and two defeats.

"Alam ko din na pagod na din ang mga players lalo na after nung game against FEU pero pinakita nila na they refused to lose and we were fortunate that they didn't give up in overtime," he added.

During their four-game winning streak that began with a 69-56 beating of University of the East on Aug. 5, the Falcons drew big games from Nuyles, Lester Alvarez, Jerick Canada and the duo of Camson and Janus Lozada, the co-winners of the UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week.

It was Lozada who sent the game into a second extra period against the Tigers by hitting a booming triple to tie it at 70-all with 3.8 seconds remaining. He finished with 19 points, five rebounds and two steals.

“Dapat maging humble pa din kami kasi wala pa kaming naaachieve,” said Lozada.

Adamson faces UE on Saturday in the hope of moving closer to its first Final Four berth since 2006, the year that Austria first took over as coach.

“Importante tong panalo namin sa UST,” said Austria. “I think nakikita na namin yung magandang liwanag sa dulo ng tunnel pero di pa din kami dapat maging complacent."
