UP protest over non-calls junked

The UAAP commissioner on Tuesday threw out the protest filed by University of the Philippines over what UP deemed were two non-calls during its loss to National University on Sunday.

Commissioner Ato Badolato said both instances cited by UP were judgment calls and therefore not appealable.

These were the supposed goaltending on a three-point attempt by Alvin Padilla in the third quarter and the lane violation by Maroon Mark Juruena in the dying seconds.

NU won the game, 61-59.

"Judgment calls are never grounds for protest, only technicalities so both of those calls were denied but they (Maroons ) have the right to appeal that," said Badolato.

Padilla's shot appeared to have been touched by NU's Emmanuel Mbe as seen in the replays.

But the other protest was rather unique although Badolato termed it “funny.”

UP’s Juruena was instructed by acting coach Boyet Fernandez to deliberately cross the line before the second free throw attempt of NU's Jewel Ponferrada in hopes of luring the Bulldogs to force a double lane violation.

If a lane violation was called, a jumpball at center court would have followed, giving UP a chance to steal the game.

"Like I said, that's a judgment call by the referee and cannot be ground for protest, assuming there was a lane violation," Badolato said. "It's a little bit funny that they want a lane violation called against them."

Meanwhile, Badolato suspended UP's Alvin Padilla (one game) for cursing game officials. Also suspended were referees Ariel Bermeo and Glenn Cornelio (two games each) for poor performance in that match.

Padilla is actually coming off a similar one-game ban for committing his second unsportsmanlike foul of the season against Ateneo on August 14 while Cornelio was earlier suspended after a game between Ateneo and Adamson on July 15.
