Binay leads delegation to HK
Vice President Jejomar Binay and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo will lead a high-level Philippine delegation to Hong Kong and China to embark on a delicate diplomatic trip to appease their outrage over what they say as the Philippine government's mishandling of the hostage drama last Monday.
Binay and Romulo will update Chinese officials on the results of the investigation regarding the bloody standoff.
“The President instructed him to visit Hong Kong and China to relay the message, to give them updates on the investigation, to make a report basically on what happened. Siguro at the same time, kasama na dun, to apologize on what happened [I think at the same time, part of the visit would be to apologize on what happened]," Benjamin Martinez Jr., Binay’s chief of staff, said.
Martinez however said they still do not have the details when the visit will take place as they are still arranging the schedule of the visit.
“We're still fixing their schedule. As we all know, there are protocols that have to be arranged,” he said, adding that it is not yet clear if the high-level delegation would be able to have a dialogue with the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) based in Hong Kong as everything would depend on the schedule.
“I promised that as soon as there is a full report I am going to see Mr. Tsang and also I will go to Beijing to see Foreign Minister Yang,” Romulo said.
“What we have to do is we want to cooperate with the Chinese authorities and the HK authorities so that we give them the full story and support them in the investigation,” Romulo said.
Martinez said the high-level delegation will proceed to Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, as well as Beijing, China, as soon as the schedules have been arranged.
It would be the Vice President's second official foreign trip following his visit to South Korea earlier this month in his capacity as the national president of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the chairman of the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Committee.
