Toilet training

How will I teach my kid to use the toilet?

A parent must begin by telling whether or not his or her child is ready for potty training.

Your child is ready for potty training if s/he:

• knows and is uncomfortable when his or her diaper is soiled or wet

• shows interest in using the potty

• knows how to follow instructions

• can stay dry for 2 hours or longer

• wakes up dry from naps

• and can control elimination

When signs of readiness are present, introduce your child to the toileting process. Let your child come with you to the toilet. Allow him or her to do the flushing for you so s/he would get familiarized.

The next step is to make your child familiar with the potty chair. Allow him or her to sit on the potty chair with his clothes on as if it is a regular chair. Also let him or her to get off the chair whenever s/he likes. When your child is already comfortable with the potty chair, try having him or her sit on it without wearing a diaper or pants. Again, allow him or her to get comfortable with it.

After that, explain to your child how the potty is used. If at first s/he doesn’t urinate or defecate, be patient. It could be that s/he is not comfortable yet. This will change over time.

After your child has gotten used to the potty chair, create a toilet routine. Make a schedule of potty chair use that your child will follow every day.
