High calcium intake could prevent obesity, says study
High intake of calcium could prevent obesity especially among post-menopausal women, according to study conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.
The FNRI study aimed to find a way to prevent obesity among females 40 to 59 years old, the age range with the highest number of cases of obesity.
Obesity poses a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular ailments, hypertension and diabetes.
The study specifically intended to assess the effect of high calcium fortified low-fat milk drink with added vitamin D on the anthropometric measurements of post-menopausal women.
Sixty women participated in the study and were randomly allocated into two groups. Group 1 received the high-calcium milk while and Group 2 received the placebo drink.
