General Motors is all set to unveil the Chevy Volt but it seems they are already making advanced research on future engines for the said plug-in vehicle.

To date, they are already scouting for potential engines which can support the GM Volt's battery and electric motor/s.

As an overview, the Volt is backed by a 1.4-liter engine which can hit up to 1,800 rpm. With their current setup, the Volt was able to run efficiently, delivering adequate power to the car's battery while also keeping the fuel consumption at conservative levels.

Now, GM is in search of an engine that can support the electric vehicle's propulsion system. Among the possible alternatives mentioned included the likes of Wankel engines, gas turbines or even motorcycle engines.

As most car manufacturers, it looks like GM is looking ahead. And just in case the need for alternative engines becomes apparent, GM wants to make sure that they are ready and of course eco-friendly.
