Men and Women – Two Different Gadgets?
If you were to ask me, I don’t think gender should be an issue as far as gadgets are concerned. Take for instance “texting” for that matter.
Texting among adults is on the rise, with more than 72 percent of those over 18 using the technology, but their usage still pales in comparison to texting among teenagers, who send an average of five times as many texts as their adult counterparts. The Pew Internet & American Life Project surveyed 2,252 people and found out that about 72 percent of adults said they sent text messages in May 2010, compared to 65 percent of people surveyed in September 2009.
Adult texters are sending an average of 10 texts per day, while those ages 12 to 17 are sending about 50 texts per day. There are some prolific adult texters – about 5 percent of adults send 200 texts per day or more; about 15 percent of teens do the same. Gender is not a major factor when it comes to texting; men and women send and receive the same number of texts on a daily basis.
Then there’s the matter of men acting like computers and us women, well, cell phones. "I don't know how to fit it in my entire work schedule," These words are normally heard from me by the hubby Joey. "You're late—and Keoni has a field demo an hour away. One of us has to get him there by 7:00. I have a presentation at 10:00 A.M. Dad needs to go to his doctor for a checkup while Mom has to go get her nails done. In the meantime, what’s for lunch?"
I hadn't even gotten to the dinner dilemma part of my list, when I knew by Joey’s wide-eyed, zombie stare that he'd shut down somewhere just after "You're late."
I've seen the look before. How many other wives have seen their husbands processing information when suddenly their "screen saver" kicks on? My husband is able to process a lot of information. I know—I can dish it out in hefty chunks. There are times, however, when something seems to happen to his internal processor. Everything locks up and I feel as if I need to, well, reboot. It's as if I'm living with a computer! What’s funny is, he says he’s living with a cell phone. Well, how can that be? Well, it’s because after a hard day’s work he'd be looking forward to coming home, to his refuge where he could simply veg out and not have to think.
Then as he walks in his peace bubble explodes into an outline of the evening's agenda. I'd been poised at the door, ready for the attack. Every word about every event of the day comes at him nonstop. Hubby later on told me my actions were akin to settling into a comfy seat at a movie theater only to have his cell phone blast. I'm a "cell phone"? I thought. And I realized I can go off unexpectedly and sometimes at the most inopportune moments. I'm also faithful to keep "calling" until I'm answered. Oh no! I thought. Maybe, I am!
There’s this popular book, made into a movie, Men are from Mars, Women from Venus? I don't know about that whole Mars/Venus thing, but I think I can safely say men and women certainly operate on different hardware. We're wired differently. To me, it seems as if men are computers and women are, well, cell phones. The computer's communication is most often a one-way communiqué. Cell phones, on the other hand, require two-party participation. They're all about communication. Cell phones and computers do have something in common.
They both need a connection, just as husbands and wives need a connection. And isn't it interesting that techno-smart people are finding more and more ways computers and cell phones can work together to make life better? Look around you, I was stuck at an airport recently and amused myself by watching men and women glued to their lappies or smart phones, checking, email, chatting, updating their Facebook or perhaps Twitting? Ah.. Live and let live!
