Mendoza fired warning shot, says driver Lubang
Manila, Philippines (PNA) — Hong Thai bus driver Alberto Lubang on Tuesday testified that hostage-taker, dismissed Manila police Sr. Insp. Rolando Mendoza, fired warning shot upon learning that his brother's gun was not returned.
Members of the Manila Police District (MPD)confiscated the service firearms of Mendozas' brother Gregorio, also a policeman with the rank of Special Police Officer 2 (SPO2), at the height of the hostage-taking incident in front of the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, Manila. before theGregorio was ordered "handcuffed" by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim for allegedly being a conspirator in the hostage-taking of his elder brother.
Lubang told the Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC), chaired by Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, that Mendoza got angry after seeing on TV his younger brother being arrested.
He also presented to the panel an illustration of the seating arrangements inside the hijacked Hong Thai tourist bus during the hostage-taking incident.
Lubang also testified that he never heard from Mendoza anything about the alleged bribery of P150,000 from an official of the Office of the Ombudsman.
The IIRC had its lunchbreak at 2 p.m. and will resume at 2:30 p.m. with an executive session.
The ocular inspection of the Quirino Grandstand, the scene of the hostage-taking incident, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
