RP senior cagers advance to semis
SEREMBAN, Malaysia — As expected, the 40 and 60-years-and-above teams of the Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association advanced to the Final Four by blasting their respective rivals in the 19th ASEAN Veterans Invitational Basketball Tournament Monday.
Rain or Shine co-team owner Terry Que and MICAA veteran Zotico Tan tallied 21 and 19 points, respectively, to star in the team’s 62-33 win over Hatyai of Thailand in the 60-years-and-above division, a victory that pushed the Filipinos closer to sweeping their four-team group elimination.
Though it was Que who led the team in scoring, it was Tan who shone brightest as he highlighted another splendid performance with eight straight points which touched off the team’s telling second quarter breakaway. It was likewise a fitting sequel to his 18-point performance in the team’s 57-43 win over Sarawak of host country the other day.
FCVBA’s 40-years squad rebounded from its stinging 64-53 defeat to Kuala Lumpur by downing host Seremban, 46-31, in a fight-marred game to book a semis berth.
The game was halted with only two minutes gone in the payoff period when a player from Seremban socked a FCVBA player. The Seremban squad was later disqualified for instigating the fight.
It was a glorious day for FCVBA as it also pulled off a thrilling 64-61 win over Meteor of Indonesia in the 50-years-and above – thanks to the red-hot shooting of former San Miguel Beer star Elmer Reyes, Kenneth Yap, Terry Saldana, Edward Tio and Lim Em Beng.
Still agile at 50, Reyes pumped in 25 points, including four pressure-packed charities in the last two minutes that helped repel Indonesia’s determined challenge. Yap, who once played for San Miguel, chipped in 14 markers while Tio and Saldana added eight points apiece.
FCVBA’s teams in the 40 and 50, however, face a tall order in the next round since they will likely face the vastly-improving teams from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
