Manila, Philippines — Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares said on Tuesday that the government's main tax agency will meet its P59.894 billion collection target this month.

After two consecutive months revenue shortfalls, Jacinto-Henares said the BIR will attain its September target due to expected collection of back taxes.

“We already have the results of our audit that we conducted. It shows that we have huge back taxes that we have to collect,” she told reporters on the of Senate Appropriations Committee Budget Hearing.

This month's collection goal is 6.5 percent higher compared with P56.237 billion actual revenue in the same month last year.

But for August, Jancinto-Henares admitted that the BIR registered a “huge” collection shortfall after the government tasked that agency with an “unrealistic” goal of P89.7 billion, or 33 percent higher than P67.5 billion in the same period in 2009.

The BIR, which makes up more than 60 percent of government income, will release its actual August collection figure on September 15.
