Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is ready to embrace technology in its bid to improve officiating next season.

Up for approval is the use of video review to verify a two-point or three-point shot for the entire game and resolve a contested out-of-bounds calls during the last two minutes of the game.

These and the other proposals will be discussed and deliberated upon when the PBA holds its annual planning session on September 19-22 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Already up for implementation next season is a new philosophy in officiating, which according to newly-appointed PBA Commissioner Chito Salud, would, in effect, let the players decide the outcome of the game.

Salud said the PBA will now operate under the framework of “only clear and hard contact will be called, eliminating touch fouls and marginal contact fouls.”

“These will allow for more free-flowing games, so players who are more physically fit and/or fundamentally sound will prosper,” said Salud during a media briefing on Thursday at his office.

“We will not be reinventing the wheel, but we will be shifting gears,” Salud said “This will ensure free-flowing game and physical play. We trust that this framework will result to desirable play for fans.”

Salud conceded that players and coaches need some time to adjust with the new guidelines, but assured that they will be impartial.

“There will be some adjustments, but we will strive for consistency. When it comes to honesty and impartiality, we will guarantee,” he said.

Salud is aware of the dangers.

“There is a danger that the game will get physical. But for as long as the players play honest defense, play to the ball and not to the man, it’s a play on. If the players have intention to hurt, he will suffer the consequence,” he warned.

“We have had so many rules changes in the past and we’ve done away with those. We’re making it simple for the referees, we’ll let the players decide the outcome game,” he added.
