Back to Glee

"Glee” has definitely taken pop culture and the music world by storm.
The surprise TV series hit about a struggling high school choir even won four Emmys recently. In his acceptance, creator Ryan Murphy said, “‘Glee’ is about the importance of arts education, so I would like to dedicate this to all my teachers who taught me to sing and finger-paint.”
Fast forward to the premiere of season two last week, which had our very own Charice earning rave reviews as Sunshine Corazon, Glee executive producers Dante Di Loreto and Ian Brennan dish out what else is in store for us Gleeks.
Glee is such a big phenomenon, do you feel pressured to maintain its success?
Dante: We produce the show in a big dark room so luckily we are protected from a lot of things going on, on the outside. I think it’s exciting to see audiences connect all over the world and we just try to make the best show possible.
Ian: Yes there have been a lot of expectations and luckily we work so hard. For me it’s so exciting day to day getting in that first shot.
In the first season some artists were hesitant to give you their music but now going into season two how has that changed?
Ian: I mean it is clear there are more artists approaching us now, but it really was trickier early on. Actually Steve Perry of Journey, when Ryan approached him with the idea of using Don’t Stop Believing as the theme really got on board and really applauded the potential of the show as it brought different genres of music to a whole different audience.
Dante: What is exciting is that families can discover music together. Younger kids may not be familiar with the songs. It is something they can do together that’s really fun.
Mr. Schuester is a Spanish teacher, do you think you will ever do a song in Spanish?
Ian: That’s a great idea. I actually like the idea that Will is a terrible Spanish teacher, and his Spanish is really bad. When he utters Spanish on the show it’s incorrect, like on the chalk board there will be bad conjugations which I totally love. But the idea of a Spanish episode with Spanish music or Latin music, there is so much to choose from, I think that would be hilarious and really interesting.
There has been much talk about Kurt getting a boyfriend as it is one anticipated plot lines, what can you share with us?
Ian: We’re still figuring it out, I think we have a pretty good idea who it might be. We’re trying to keep it as serious as possible, it’s interesting and constructive that it struck a chord with people and that many people are curious. It’s a good sign for society that a gay character on television is in the rumor mill about who is boyfriend will be. That wouldn’t have happened ten years ago so we have made some progress. Another relationship that is popular with audiences is that of Kurt and his dad.
Ian: There’s something aspirational about that relationship in particular. And I think that’s really struck a chord with people. What you get on TV is always that acrimonious type of relationship that often is really realistic between parents and gay kids or kids that are different in any sense of the word. Just putting a little twist in it, particularly with Mike O’Malley who is such a soulful, thoughtful actor it struck us as well. We sort of came up with that idea and it has just been fantastic. It kind of struck everybody and not just in America but all over.
Glee has already been picked up for a third season even before the second season starts airing, how did that come about?
Dante: That was an amazing vote of confidence from the network, by knowing that we are going to be making that many episodes it enable us to do production that you normally can’t if you’re only working one year at a time. And the writers get to think ahead and develop the story. It’s easier to plan the big picture when you know you’ve got two years ahead.
Ian: It really puts wind in your sails. It makes me more excited to write.
