MANILA, Philippines — Clarice Patrimonio and Tamitha Nguyen hurdled separate foes to arrange an all-Filipino title clash in the Vietnam International Junior Championship Becamex Cup in Binh Duong.

Nguyen, daughter of former RP team member Edna Olivarez-Nguyen, scored the biggest win for the two rising Filipino netters as she stunned top seed Nadya Syarifah, 6-2, 6-0.

The win was doubly sweet for Nguyen as she snapped a two-game losing run to the Indon netter since June.

Patrimonio, daughter of former basketball icon, Alvin Patrimonio, recovered from an opening set defeat to beat Sawanya Vasupongchai of Thailand, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

It marks the first time that Patrimonio and Nguyen will slug it out for the title in an international tournament.

Patrimonio, who turns 17 next month, is gunning for her second straight championship after winning a title in Hong Kong last week – a victory that enabled her to jump to No. 252  in the International Tennis Federation junior standings.

Nguyen, 16, meanwhile, shoots for her first crown this year to surpass her best finish of two quarterfinal appearances in Brunei and Malaysia last March.

Patrimonio also advanced to the doubles finals as her partnership with Syarifah proved too much over the tandem of Nguyen Tuc Kim Ngan and Huynh Phi Khanh of Vietnam, 6-3, 6-4.
