The Beatles' catalog finally on iTunes

MANILA, Philippines — The digital world has been bitten by the Beatlemania bug at last.
Apple Inc. announced on Nov. 16 that all of The Beatles’ albums and singles are finally available for download on iTunes.
Remaining Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are both happy and excited over the news.
“It’s fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around,” said McCartney in a statement.
Starr, meanwhile, quipped, “I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes.”
John Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, enthused on her Twitter account, “In the joyful spirit of Give Peace A Chance, I think it is so appropriate that we are doing this on John’s 70th birthday year.”
The band’s discography has been missing in action in the popular online music store because of a previous, long-running trademark dispute between Apple, Inc. and the Beatles’ management company, Apple Corps. It was the latter who resisted selling the influential quartet’s albums to iTunes, until the two parties, including The Beatles’ label EMI, settled the row in 2007. As an agreement, both have rights on joint use of the apple name and logo.
All of the band’s 13 re-mastered studio albums (with iTunes LPs), special compilations such as the “Red” and “Blue” greatest hits collections, and the “Past Masters” two-volume set, are all up for purchase on iTunes for $12.99 for single albums and $19.99 for double. Singles can also be bought for $1.29 each.
Fans can also avail of the entire catalog with the “Beatles Box Set,” which includes all the studio albums, “Past Masters” collection, mini-documentaries for each of those records, as well as the video of the Fab Four’s first-ever concert in the United States, “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964.″
The records sold like hotcakes upon their release on iTunes. The Associated Press reported that eight of the band’s slew of albums made it to the top 25 albums, including “Abbey Road,” “Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “The White Album,” and the 149-dollar boxed set. However, the report added that first-day sales and download statistics would not be released.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs welcomed the entrance of one of the best-selling bands on iTunes, saying, “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes ten years ago.”
Since The Beatles shook the music scene in the '60s, and even with their dissolution years after, they have sold 600 million albums worldwide, said the AP report. In 2009, meanwhile, the re-mastered versions of their album moved 18 million copies in total.
Dubbed by Time Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s Most Influential People, The Beatles have captivated fans worldwide including Filipinos. The band held their first and last concert here in Manila in 1966.
