Young scientists rule!

MANILA, Philippines — Fifty four students from 10 campuses of the Philippine Science High School System and participated in the PSHSS - Meralco Management and Learning Development Center (PSHSS-MMLDC) Science Fair held recently. Also showcased were 26 research projects clustered into Math and Engineering, Computer Science, Animal Science, Plant Science and Microbiology and Chemistry and Biochemistry categories were showcased.
The science fair is the result of the collaboration between PSHSS, headed by PSHS-WV director and Science Fair chairman Dr. Josette Biyo, and MMLDC, represented by executive director Agnes Fidelino and academic services director Vivien Arnobit.
With theme “Building a Culture of Science,” the fair seeks to raise the interest of students in science as well as research and investigative projects, and also provide young scientists with an opportunity to showcase their research works, inventions and breakthroughs in an environment that promotes camaraderie and cooperation instead of competition.
The participants shared their projects with their peers as well as their experience, from conceptualization to implementation in the Student Summit held on the first day of the event.
On the second day, they presented their research works to fellow PSHS students as well as public high school students from Cainta, Antipolo and Pasig, while experts critiqued their research and encourage them to improve on their work.
This was followed by a plenary session with the panel of experts, some of whom are PSHS alumni, composed of Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara of the UP Electrical and Electronics Institute, Dr. Edna Amparado of the UP Institute of Biology, Asian Institute of Management professor and Hybridigm Consulting, Crimson Tayco of the UP Marine Science Institute, Jason Alcarez of the PSHS Main Campus and Dr. Maria Corazon de Ungria, head of the UP DNA Analysis Laboratory, who shared their own research works and gave the students a glimpse of emerging
trends in their respective fields of expertise.
The event concluded with a Community Science Fair wherein the participating PSHS students presented their works to public school students.
“We deliberately ensured to make this event a non-competitive fair in order to emphasize the skills and intellect of our youth. Through this program, we hope to instill not only professionalism among our young scientists, but also nationalism as we envision them to take the lead in nation- building by using their gifts for the development of our country,” Dr. Biyo explained.
