Pacman buys mansion for Mom Dionisia
MANILA, Philippines — Boxing great and Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao bought for his mother a mansion in an exclusive village in Makati City, officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) disclosed on Wednesday.
The revenue officials, however, would not divulge the exact site of the mansion but said it could either be at the exclusive villages of Forbes or Dasmariñas, known enclaves of the rich and famous.
The multi-million-peso real estate deal surfaced as BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto Henares instructed tax probers to audit Pacquiao's 2009 financial statements.
The property acquisition is one of issues being looked into as tax investigators conceded that Pacquiao has the funds to buy such a very expensive property.
Henares also welcomed the pledge of Pacquiao to make available to the BIR his boxing contracts and earnings from all sources.
Pacquiao was placed under audit following reports that he only remitted seven million pesos in income tax payments last year, a small amount from the P125 million he remitted the previous year.
Insiders said the solon should have paid more taxes considering his huge earnings last year, including the guaranteed purse earnings of $25 million from his bouts with Ricky Hatton in May and Miguel Cotto in November.
Former Manila Rep. and Pacquiao spokesman Miles Roces told ABS-CBN Anthony Taberna that they will furnish the BIR with all documents it sought.
He said the low payment was a result of the delay in the remittance of prize money.
BIR records showed that Pacquiao has no history of evading payments of taxes.
He was one of the traditional top individual taxpayers of the Pasig Revenue District Office which has jurisdiction over his MP Promotions.
MP Promotions, based at the Ortigas Business Center, handles all financial deals of Pacquiao, including his TV rights and commercials.
Henares would not say whether Pacquiao is under tax fraud investigation, declaring that they are still in the process of collating documents.
She said that the filing of a criminal complaint is a matter of evidence and the boxing icon should present evidence like contracts and payment he received to prove that there was no willful neglect on his part to evade payment of correct taxes.
