MANILA, Philippines – The Senate is set to hold a caucus Monday to discuss motions to cite in contempt three former military officials and a lawyer called to the recent hearing on the plea bargaining agreement between special state prosecutors and former military comptroller, retired Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia.

Senator Teofisto Guingona, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee (on Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations), said three motions for contempt against Garcia, former military comptroller Jacinto Ligot, and former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes and his legal counsel Bonifacio Alentajan, will be decided Monday.

It can be recalled that during the last hearing on Thursday, Senators Franklin Drilon and Jinggoy Estrada called to cite Garcia for contempt for always using as an excuse his right against self-incrimination.

Senators Miriam Defensor Santiago, Jinggoy Estrada, Francis Escudero and Antonio Trillanes IV also filed a separate manifestation to cite Reyes and Alentajan for contempt.

In their joint motion, the committee was urged to deny the motion filed by Reyes and his lawyer seeking sought to inhibit the four senators from the hearing.

The senators also called to cite the two personalities for contempt for Reyes’ alleged false testimony and Alentajan’s supposed ignorance of the law and by making derogatory and provocative remarks in the media against the committee and some senators.
