Reyes family decries reports

MANILA, Philippines – The children of former AFP Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes expressed disappointment over published accounts regarding their father’s reputation following the general’s death last Tuesday.

In a statement, his children, Bogie, Jett, Marc, Carlo, and Judd Reyes, questioned the accounts being released in newspapers, television, radio and public gatherings.

“Some of these accounts have been grossly inaccurate, terribly unfair, and downright vicious. We suppose that’s part of the price a public servant has to pay. But it pains us greatly that a good and kind-hearted man like our Papa can be maligned so casually,” they said.

Reyes’ children cited their father’s achievements as “a dedicated soldier for 39 years” and a family man through all those years.

They said that in spite of his achievements, Reyes maintained a low profile among his constituents.

“He demands the best from his subordinates, striving for excellence in any endeavor, but finds contentment in eating corned beef, monggo, and sardines…can easily strike up a sincere conversation even with the lowest ranking soldier, policeman, or barangay tanod,” they said.

They also noted his bravery in the face of crisis. “He was instrumental in Edsa 2 where he had to withdraw support from President Estrada for the higher interest of the nation, but was man enough to go to Malacanang and face the beleaguered president to perform his duty,” they said.

They said their father has “never spoken ill of anyone in public – not even those who have openly or secretly attacked him.”

“He is and will forever be, our idol – and no amount of ridiculous rumors, intrigues, and accusations from the ignorant, the envious, and those who have nothing better to do than to cowardly criticize him, will ever change that,” they said.

Case Closed

The death by suicide of Reyes is deemed a “closed case” after investigations indicated there was no foul play involved, according to National Capital Region Police chief Nicanor Bartolome.

Bartolome also said that the police will also respect the wish of the Reyes family for privacy and not to conduct an autopsy or paraffin test on the remains of the former secretary.

He said investigators concluded that Reyes’s death was self-inflicted based witness accounts and evidence taken from scene.

However, the NCRPO said that they may still ask the family to turn over the handgun used by Reyes in committing suicide once the situation calms down.

Bartolome said the police believe that the firearm used by Reyes in committing suicide was with his family because they were only one present in the scene.

He said they may request the family to turn over the gun its license is with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Firearms and Explosives Division (FED).

He said that the FED must take custody of the firearm because it is licensed to the former defense chief and he is already dead.

Meanwhile, Chief Supt. Francisco Manalo, Jr., director of the Eastern Police District, said continuing the investigation is pointless since the Reyes family has already waived the conduct of the autopsy.

“What are we going to establish when all points to self-inflicted gunshot wound as the cause of his death? Besides, we are not zeroing in on anyone as a suspect because the witnesses and some pieces of evidence somehow established that his wound in the chest was indeed self-inflicted,” said Manalo in a phone interview.(With reports from Jean Fernando, Aaron Recuenco, Leslie Ann Aquino, and Hannah L. Comments

I am a filipino living abroad but always aware of all the current events in our country. It is sad losing one of your loved ones. I can relate those feelings when my father died of a cardiac arrest.
Going back to the circumstances Gen. Reyes died, maybe it is a
"WAKE-UP CALL" to all our corrupt military officials and politicians.
As far as I can recall, this is the first time a high ranking official took
his own life. Probably, Gen. Reyes just wants to prove and set an
example to all those corrupt people in our country. I agree with
Mr. Ibarra's comments, confiscate all the money they stole and give them to all our suffering countrymen.

Taking one's own life is unforgivable. If this is really the cause of his death. For many of us, the cause of his death is still obsucre. How can a man holding a book can still hold a gun and kill himself. The family must allow a thorough investigation on his death.

His death will not silence the outpouring cry of the Filipino in search for the truth, justice on this Euro Generals Million Dollar loot. We must not settle for Gutierrez orchestration of freeing Garcia. Remember, the other Garcia who previously heads the GSIS, he also dissapear without notice. He too must be investigated by the Senate and answer for the irreconcilable records of million government employees.

God is a forgiving God, all we have to do is ask for His forgiveness if we commited such shameful sin during our journey on this lifetime. It is better that we repent while we are still alive because one can always serve for whatever punishment is necessary for a committed crime rather for a dead man asking for forgiveness.

My personal condolence to the family of Mr. Angelo Reyes who preterminated his basic right to exist. Perhaps he wrongfully assumed that it is better that way without knowing the horror of what lies ahead. May be he believed that he will be "Resting In Peace". But is it? Man may excape earthly justice but not God's justice. ""...it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment", says the Bible. Once you exited from this earthly life with your sin the horror ahead is eternal. Read St. Luke 16:19-31 of your Bible.

The Bible says that every person born on this planet is a sinner. That is why all of us have a sinful lifestyle--not only those in government positions but including those with accusing fingers. But God's offer of love and forgiveness is always available through Jesus Christ for those who repent and ask for clemency.

"Reyes family decries reports" - Kung hindi siya nagpakamatay, e di napatunayan sana niya na malinis ang pangalan niya!!

Just the same, all those found guilty of a crime and in prison usually are protrayed as a 'good' man or woman by their loved onces.... except those who are victimized.. In Reyes case, the victims are the People of the Philippines.

again, i hope that gen. reyes face his Creator with clean heart by doing what he thought is right..but then again, commiting suicide to escape his wrongdoing is a one way ticket to hell. i fully agree with miriam defensor to call his wife and children to testify in the senate hearing for the simple reason that they are the root cause of why gen. reyes took those riches that doesn't belong to them. a pocket money of $10,000 coming from the tax payers blood and sweat for her wife to enjoy her self on a trip abroad alone is a damnation. forgiving is devine....but not for gen. reyes' family while their patriarch is rotting in hell.

I don't know Angelo Reyes personally, but in reviewing his biography, it made me think that he is not REALLY a corrupt person like other politicians in the Philippines. If he was (were) a corrupt person, it will not only be 50 million pesos to sell his soul! He made bad judgement. Look at the crooks and corrupt people who can get away from stealing millions of dollars! What about the Marcoses? The Arroyos? Joseph Estrada? Did they serve the country like the way Angelo Reyes did? NO! Do I condon what Angelo did? NO!

I agree with the sons of Angelo Reyes on their comments about their Papa and the malicious accounts about their father. I pray that they will be strong in facing all the challenges ahead of them.

The investigation of Angie Reyes should not stop.

It is only fair for the nation to find the whole rotten truth. His death should not exonerate him and the others.

The accomplishments of Angie Reyes is one thing. The corruption charges is another thing. If we stop the investigation on the basis of his accomplishments then all those in government service are automatically pardoned from their wrongdoings as long as they serve the people.

Anything you steal from the nation, whether you are a president, a general, a senator, or a government clerk should be confiscated. No ifs or buts!

Let's stop graft and corruption.

Angie Reyes should be forgiven but he has to return things that do not belong to him.
