LTFRB consulted on new LRT, MRT fare hikes
MANILA, Philippines — The managements of both the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) are not jacking up their fares until the new rates they have decided to implement are consulted with the Land Transport Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
LRT Authority (LRTA) spokesperson Hernando Cabrera said the authorities would have yet to hold a consultation with the LTFRB before implementing any adjustment in their current fares.
Cabrera said the authorities are already processing all the documents they need in the consultation for transmission to the LTFRB.
He could not say when they would submit their document to the LTFRB, but said the LRTA and the MRT management would simultaneously do so.
Cabrera said that although they are bound to respect the decision of the LTFRB, they are of the belief that the LTFRB may merely recommend changes in the new rates they have drawn up because what they will hold is just a consultation.
He said that they assume that the LTFRB would not go to the extent of approving or disapproving their new rates because in the past, it noted that in consultations to be held with it in connection with their fare adjustments, the LRT need not file a petition with it.
