CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Noel Langamin, a 22-year-old part-time caddie, fired a one-under par 71 at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club Saturday to lead Del Monte Golf Club to a huge 18-point victory in the 64th Philippine Airlines Men’s Interclub golf team championships.

Twelve points ahead at the start of the final round, Del Monte finished strongly with 141 points to win its second title and end Canlubang’s five-year reign.

Reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla struggled with 33 points, but Langamin and two other unheralded teammates delivered for Del Monte.

Langamin, playing his third Interclub, shot five birdies against four bogeys for 37 points and drew solid support from Leonardo Lofranco (36) and rookie Vince Lusterio (35).

Lofranco bucked a pick-up and four bogeys with six birdies while Lusterio rallied from four-over at the turn with three birdies coming home.

“We’re happy to win again,” said Del Monte playing captain Yoyong Velez who did not count with 30 points. “The boys played according to expectations. If you will look at the scorecards, only twice did we fail to score 30 points or better.”

Velez said the application of the new system that places a ceiling on the team average score makes Del Monte a formidable team in the years to come.

“We hope to win again next year in Davao,” said Velez. Hurt by the new system, Canlubang failed to mount a rally and found itself in a spirited battle for second place with CCC.

Both teams wound up with 535 points apiece, but CCC grabbed second spot after the scores of the two teams’ fifth man were included in the equation.

Former pro Carl Almario led CCC with 37 points with Bayani Garcia, a 300-plus pound ball striker, adding 34.

Other CCC scorers were Jovi Neri and Chukie Hong with 32.

Marko Sarmiento’s 30 did not count, but lifted CCC past Canlubang in the tiebreak for second place.

“Of course, we’re very happy. To beat a champion team like Canlubang is a big accomplishment,” said CCC skipper Montito Garcia.

Canlubang, hardest hit by the new restrictions, was relegated to third place.

Veteran Dave Hernandez, recalled from the seniors’ squad, was Canlubang’s top scorer with 37 points followed by the 35 of world junior champion Rupert Zaragosa.

Jobim Carlos, paired with Mondilla in the final flight of the championship round, returned with 34 while Migo Ochoa bogeyed the final hole for 29 points.

For the second straight time, Rolly Viray failed to count with 28 points.

Alabang captured the Founders’ division after scoring 119 points at Del Monte Golf Club in Bukidnon for a four-day total of 481 points.
