KALIBO, Aklan, Philippines (PNA) - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) here is pushing for more disaster preparedness trainings following the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan

Arlu Sabar, Phivolcs chief here, said that they have been conducting trainings on disaster preparedness both in private and public institutions as well as schools and other organizations in the past.

"Aklan is both an agricultural and tourism province so everyone must be prepared in times of disaster. We have been using even our personal funds to ensure that Aklan residents are given disaster preparedness orientation," Sabar said.

Sabar said that several local government officials and stakeholders in the province are not keen on disaster preparedness orientations.

He expressed hopes that the Japan incident would open the eyes of some government and private leaders to hold disaster preparedness trainings in their respective areas of jurisdictions.

The Western part of Aklan is included in the earthquake fault zone.
