Boracay traders plagued with blowfly infestation
BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Philippines (PNA) – Business establishments on this resort island are complaining of an apparent blowfly infestation which they fear is a threat to the health of locals and tourists alike, apart from being an eyesore.
In a letter addressed to the Barangay Yapak Council, Mark Kirk, General Manager of the ultra-deluxe Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa said the resort has been experiencing a “siege of the blowfly since November 2010.” In his letter, Kirk offered the resort’s help in solving the issue.
“The source of the blowfly is the decaying and exposed organic waste at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) nearby,” he said.
The Shangri-La management has committed to help ensure proper segregation of wastes generated by the hotel, bi-weekly treatments of waste dumped at the MRF and garbage collection trucks.
For her part, Cely Recampo, assistant manager for internal operations of another tourist establishment on the island, the Zoe Mei Resort, also complained about the same problem.
