Homonhon residents urged to report environment abuses
BORONGAN, Eastern Samar, Philippines — Guiuan Municipal Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan appealed to residents of Homonhon to help the government by reporting any abuses committed against the island’s natural riches.
In her message during the celebration of the 490th Landing of Ferdinand Magellan in Homonhon, Kwan stressed that the activity was a meaningful occasion because it reminded residents of the beauty of the place.
“Keep an eye on the activities here and tell us if you see any violations,” Kwan said.
The mayor referred to alleged illegal mining and logging, as well as blast fishing on the island.
“I believe in sustainable development,” Kwan said.
Kwan cited tourism promotion and the improvement of life the ways she thinks best to achieve the development she wants for Homonhon.
“I don’t want the kind of development that results to destruction and damage,” Kwan said.
“The town’s internal revenue allotment of R50 million annually,” according to Kwan, “is not enough” to effectively manage all 61 barangays.
Despite this, Kwan promised that she will do all she can in trying to make both ends meet for the second-class municipality because it is her obligation.
