GOVERNMENT CENTER, Palo, Leyte, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Eastern Visayas said it will look into the deteriorating condition of a vital concrete bridge in Eastern Samar and other bridges in Samar island.

DPWH Region 8 Director Rolando M. Asis said he has directed DPWH Eastern Samar District Engineer Pacita Gavan to look into the deteriorating condition of the Dolores bridge in Dolores, Eastern Samar as it is a vital bridge in Eastern Samar.

Asis said he has issued a memorandum to District Engineer Gavan that the bridge and other bridges in Eastern Samar be inspected and that he be furnished with a report about their condition so that
it can be given proper action or rehabilitated by the agency.

He admitted that if the Dolores bridge collapses, it will affect direly land transport to interior towns of Eastern Samar and to Lapinig, Northern Samar.

He said there are other concrete bridges in Northern Samar which are deteriorating and which the DPWH is poised to also give attention.

Earlier, Eastern Samar’s Dolores Mayor Emiliana P. Villacarillo had expressed alarm over the failure of the DPWH to look into the erosion which has occured as a consequence of the siltation of the Dolores river.
