URDANETA CITY, Pangasinan — The first of its kind in Pangasinan, the Urdaneta City Engineered Sanitary Landfill will be inaugurated soon as scheduled with President Aquino.

The sanitary landfill covers an area of six hectares in Sitio Calegu, Barangay Catablan, with a total volume capacity sufficient to accommodate this city’s solid waste for the next 10 to 12 years.

A project of Mayor Amadeo R. Perez Jr. in 2009, the landfill will address the garbage problem in the city owing to its rapidly growing population and the mushrooming of businesses and schools.

It was funded through a P200-million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) and features support infrastructure, the acquisition of additional lots, and the concreting of an access road to the site.

Project components consist of an impermeable HDPE liner over compacted clay, two layers of geosynthetic membrane, gravel filter layer, HDPE leachate collection and transfer piping system, pumping station, leachate treatment pond, weighbridge with support truck scale house, wheel wash facility, storm pond to control silt migration, groundwater monitoring wells, and an administrative building with appropriate parking area.
