BENGUET, Philippines — Fourteen people, including eight children, were injured when their vehicle lost its brakes down a mountain slope in Bokod, Benguet the other day, a regional police official said Thursday.
Chief Superintendent Villamor Bumanglag, police director in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), said the black Chevrolet (GHR-555) lost its brakes along the downhill strip of the Baguio-Vizacaya Road in Sitio Ngano-an, Barangay Poblacion around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Bumanglag identified the victims as Erwin Baguilat, 20; Solomon Licyayo, 20; Shary Mae Licyayo, 22; Joel Prince Bilibli, 7; Princes Joy Licyayo, 7; Rosalyn Paligan, 30; RJ Paligan, 10; Darline Uyan, 4; Ariel Baguilat, 9; Elisa Regacho, 43; a certain Rowena, 20; CJ Regacho, 5; CD Regacho, 9; and one-year-old Elija Palogan.
He said the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Quoting field reports, Bumanglag said the victims were on their way to Baguio City from Kiangan, Ifugao.
While driving at high speed, driver Ryan Regacho noticed that the brakes were not working as they were approaching a sharp curve along the descending road. It was already too late to make adjustments so the car crashed, said Bumanglag.
