50 landslide-prone, 20 flood-prone areas identified in Cordillera
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) revealed Friday that it has identified 50 barangays in the region that are landslide-prone and 20 more considered to be flood-prone.
MGB-CAR Regional Director Orlando Pineda said the identification of geologically hazardous places in the different parts of the region will serve as a guide to local governments in implementing their respective disaster risk management programs.
The MGB said the landslide-susceptible barangays are located in the provinces of Benguet, Mountain province, Kalinga, Apayao, Ifugao and Abra while the flood-prone areas are found in the low-lying provinces of Abra, Apayao, Kalinga and Ifugao.
Pineda said appropriate mitigating measures must be adopted by individuals wanting to build structures to spare them from eminent danger in these areas.
The Cordillera has been previously considered as a geohazard region because of its peculiar mountainous terrain, thus, the presence of a large sum of landslide-prone places that pose a serious threat to life and limb.
Pineda said results of the earlier geohazard mapping done in all the region’s provinces have already been submitted to the concerned local governments for their compliance relative to the institution of the appropriate mitigating measures that will ensure the stability of the structures to be constructed from eminent danger, especially during times of calamities.
He said the flood-prone areas are located along rivers that often rise during the occurrence of heavy rains and typhoons thereby putting to risk people living nearby, thus, the best remedy is for residents living along river banks to relocate to higher places that will guarantee their safety.
