Limasawa closer to nutrition award
TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — The island town of Limasawa, Southern Leyte, which for a second-in-a-row has been a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN), is now under consideration for Nutrition Honor Award, the top award in nutrition.
Chances of this 6th class town to grab the top award this year drew closer with the arrival of the National Evaluation Team (NET) on nutrition from Manila on May 24, 2011 and together with the Regional Evaluation Team here visited the historic town, where the First Mass was celebrated in 1521, to assess the town’s nutrition standing on May 25-27, 2011.
The NET was headed by no less than DoH Assistant Secretary Maria- Bernardita T. Flores, NNC Executive Director IV, with Jovita B. Raval of the NNC Nutrition Information and Education Division, Jasmine Tandingan of Nutrition Surveillance Division, Belinda F. Castro of DILG Central Office and official photographer Joy Hermogenes as members.
It was reported that although Limasawa’s geophysical location makes delivery of basic health services difficult, the municipality still is able to maintain its optimum nutritional status through its highly functional Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) headed by Mayor Melchor P. Petracorta as chair, with all six barangay captains in the island as members.
