Cebu to close main road
CEBU CITY, Philippines (PNA) — The Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) Office has announced that the stretch of Osmeña Blvd. will be closed to traffic from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday to give way to the “Road Revolution.”
The Road Revolution, which is spearheaded by the Law of Nature Foundation, pushes for a "turnaround" of the present road and transportation system.
The activity, which is slated on the national celebration of Independence Day, is aimed at encouraging people to walk, take public transport vehicles or ride bicycles instead of using vehicles that run on fossil fuel.
“We want freedom from pollution and independence from slavery to oil," said environmentalist lawyer and Ramon Magsaysay laureate Antonio Oposa Jr.
Oposa, the foundation’s president, said using oil-run vehicles is affected by rising fuel prices and causes pollution.
On the same day, Oposa and other environmentalists, including lawyer Gloria Estenzo Ramos, will turn over more than 10,000 signatures they collected to ask the Cebu City Council to draft an ordinance that the existing roads be divided longitudinally into four parts.
